Dr. Abler's current research interests include international trade, natural resource and environmental economics, and international economic development. His current research projects include adaptation to climate change in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States; modeling the impacts of agricultural trade liberalization proposals within the current round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations; economic impacts of agricultural trade policy reforms in India; and policy options for reducing nonpoint pollution.

Dr. Abler is also a Senior Research Associate at Penn State's Population Research Institute. He is past president of the Penn State chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. He was a visiting research professor at Wageningen University in the Netherlands in 1994.
