Professor of Agricultural Economics
(Ph.D., Agricultural Economics, Purdue University, 1977)

Professor Beierlein works in the area of Food Systems Management with emphasis in the areas of human resources management and supply chain management. He has been the editor of the two major international journals in the agribusiness area—Agribusiness: An International Journal, and The International Food and Agribusiness Management Review (IFAMR). Dr Beierlein has a long-time interest in case learning (he has taught with them for over 25 years) and is currently Case Editor for IFAMR. In addition Jim is a Faculty Affiliate in The Center For Supply Chain Management in Smeal College of Business at Penn State.

Professor Beierlein is active in the College of Agricultural Sciences. He is a past Chair of the College Faculty Organization, been a member and chair of a number of college committees, and has served several terms on the Curricular Affairs Committee. In 1997 he was the recipient of the College’s Outstanding Teacher Award. He has been the department’s student club advisor for many years.

Service has also been given to The American Agricultural Economics Association. Dr. Beierlein has served on its Industry Affairs, and twice on its Teaching, Learning, and Communication’s Committee. He co-chaired the committee during his last assignment and has co-chaired the National Teaching Workshop for this group. His courses employ a variety of innovative and computer based teaching approaches

Jim is the co-author of seven books on Agribusiness Management and Marketing. The third edition of his popular text The Principles of Agribusiness Management will be published in early 2003. He is also the co-author of a major book on Student Success that is used to help new college students make the transition from high school to college learning. The book is the result of more than 15 years of teaching the college’s student success course.
