Research Interests

Dr. Smith divides his research between the study of rural economic change in the U.S. and agricultural development in third world countries. He was among the first researchers to examine the role of service industries in the rural U.S.  Current research includes rural development policy, economic transitions of rural communities, and rural employment. International research areas include small and peasant farm development, agrarian reform and land institutions, markets for traditional crops, and rural development. Dr. Smith has worked in Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Spain and Venezuela.  He has worked with the World Bank, the International Tropical Agriculture Center (CIAT), and was in the Peace Corps.  In 1998-99, he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Institute for Peruvian Studies in Lima, Peru.
